What is a Chandler?
No, I did not misspell the light fixture, of which several beautiful examples can be found throughout the restaurant, nor am I referring to a certain sarcastic television character. I am talking about French Quarter history, in particular, the history of the building at 1011 Decatur Street.
Back when the shipping business ruled the French Quarter and tourism was non-existent, our building took a turn providing essential supplies to visitors from all over the world. The inventory would have ranged from tar, pitch, and whale oil to hammers, hooks, and spikes. Anything you could need for an ocean adventure in the 1800's.
Rumor has it that the entrepreneurs at 1011 Decatur were providing more than just rope and tools to the weary sailors. Stay tuned for an examination of suspected illicit activity throughout the centuries.
